In the language of the Kaurna people, Purruna is a word that gives life. It is about living, the wellbeing of our physical self and how our mind and our hearts enable us to connect in a wise and knowledgeable way, both with each other and the land.
To create a symbol that represented the meaning and purpose behind Purruna Spencer Newton Centre, Scotch was honoured to work with Uncle Mickey O’Brien, a senior Aboriginal man and descendant of the Kaurna (Adelaide Plains) and Narrunga (Yorke Peninsula) people.
The logo represents the connection between the culture of Scotch College and the oldest living culture of the First Nations people. Kaurna culture is built around sharing with each other and the community, a value that is also at the core of Scotch College’s commitment to wellbeing.
The Lion Rampant represents strength, courage, and the history and values of Scotch College, while the design within brings together the twin constellations of Orion (The Seven Brothers) and Pleiades (The Seven Sisters), recognising how each of them contribute to the living community. The seven sisters and the seven brothers meet at the head and the heart of the lion, because when we open our minds, our body, and our spirit to each other, we are able to learn from each other and use our collective wisdom for the wellbeing of ourselves, our community and the land.
The Purruna logo is a fitting tribute to the traditional owners of the land on which we live and work, and to the rich history of Scotch College Adelaide.
